I have an unwritten rule that I don't worry about the "unwritten rules".
(Except, of course, that I just wrote it down so it's no longer an unwritten
rule. Oh well.) Unless you have an inside link into the company you're
applying to, you don't know what unwritten rules the person reviewing your
CV is playing by. So why worry?
I use hard returns and spaces on my CV when I send it via an agency because,
all too frequently, someone to whom it is sent converts it into text... and
just like that, all the pretty styles are gone and any formatting more
complex than line breaks and spaces... gone. I want my CV to look good in
Word and be readable if it's converted to a text file. If that means someone
assumes I don't know how to use styles... well, that's life. <g>In the Game
of Life, the unwritten rules are intended to make losers of us all.</g>
