Jason, John, and Dick, you are, of course, absolutely right.
Dick and Jason: We had used different types of variables for the product
name, but we indeed were guilty of not planning ahead. It had never
occurred to us words like "solution" or "system" would somehow be included
in the name of the product.
John: It had never occurred to us to make this a policy because we (the doc
team) had drilled this into peoples? heads for so long, explaining the
threat to the trademark over and over again and correcting incorrect usage
of the product name. But we never documented it outside our own sytle guide
or made it a policy, and as I said, the doc team was not consulted about
the change. But your comment has made me realize that it may be good
practice to implement a policy and even a guideline to product nomenclature
(for use outside of the doc department).
I?m still not convinced, however, that searching the book for the product
name and making manual tweaks is any less convenient than managing the
variables. I?m open to suggestion, that said.
Johanne Cadorette
