The advantage to basing styles on a single "parent" is ease of changing them all by altering the base style (picking a different body font for print vs. on-line, for example).

Aside from "'Cause I've always done it that way," one advantage to using Normal is that Ctrl+Shift+N applies that style.  I know, I could reassign that key combination to apply any style I want, but why bother?  I've never had a problem with it.
