Contracting question

I am currently on a contract for 3 months and this is
the first time I'm working as a contractor. There are
two more months for my contract to end and I am not
sure if they'll extend my contract. 

Here is my question - when do I start looking for
other contracts/jobs? I enjoy the work I'm doing
(documenting APIs) but the company is struggling with
funding issues. If I find a better, stable job, can I
stop a contract mid-way? Most employers are looking
for writers who can join immediately. Please advise.  

Also, does anybody know of any agencies in the Seattle
area than can get me part-time technical writing
contracts?
