RE: Word TOCs from multiple docs ?
RD for consolidated TOC: Cool tool or clunky monkey?
How much better/easier/safer is this than using a master document?

Considerably easier, IMO. It's a bit clunky to get set up, but once it's set up, it just works. Unlike master documents, which have a tendency to fall apart in unrecoverable ways.
