Bruce Byfield wonders if anybody else on the list use a programming or scripting language in
their work? If so, which one? And what sort of tasks do you use them for?
Perl -- it is the Swiss Army Chainsaw of geekdom ;) It is great for batch file manipulation and modification. Actually, with Perl it only takes a minute or two to hack out a script to automate about anything you need do do repetitively. CPAN has tons of scripts and modules available to download and do just about anything you can imagine. It is limited only by your imagination. It is rare to find a problem that can't be handled with Perl.
Python is easier to learn and is catching up with Perl in the capability department. It is especially good for "prototyping" code because it reads like psuedocode -- but it runs so you can demonstrate the viability of your prototype. Python also interfaces smoothly with the Windows DOM and will do anything VB or VBS will do, only easier.
