Subject:RE: More problems with Word numbering From:"Jane Carnall" <jane -dot- carnall -at- digitalbridges -dot- com> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Wed, 8 May 2002 13:51:07 +0100
Hi Kathryn.
>I used Word's built-in headings, but modified the paragraph and numbering
properties. Was working just fine except for some reason, every time I
restart page numbering, for example, with Heading 3, the formatting CHANGES
-- forcing me to "manually fix" everything (which of course defeats the
purpose of auto-numbering!!!). In particular I have set a .5" hanging
indent for the Heading 3 style and it KEEPS switching back to .25." Does
anyone know why? This makes no sense to me -- is it a bug?<
It's pithy and full of useful information - an excellent technical writing
example <g>.
I do know that *once* your outline numbering scheme starts going wonky (and
if you don't follow the Seven Laws, it is awfully easy to nudge it over the
edge from order into wonkiness) it can be very hard to fix. How big is the
document you're updating? Is it feasible to start from the beginning, create
a Seven Laws template, and cut and paste the material into your new
template, using Notepad as an interim stage to eliminate any unwanted
styles?

The writers all stand around a cauldron chanting and occasionally tossing in
a small Bill Gates. Unless stated otherwise, these opinions are mine, and
mine alone. Apologies for the long additional sig: it is added automatically
and outwith my control.
