"Thinking in Java" by Bruce Eckels is an excellent book for this.

BTW - Why do developers need to be shepherded through this? Java is an improvement over C++ in the same way C++ is an improvement over C.

IMHO, a competent C/C++ programmer needs very little training to pick up Java, especially if a good IDE like Netbeans (www.netbeans.org) or Borland's J-Builder is used.
