Subject:Re: Hyperlinking Index Entries in Word From:dmbrown -at- brown-inc -dot- com To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Tue, 14 May 2002 08:42:40 -0700
Catherine Ednie wants the entries in her Word index to be hyperlinks, but the motivating factor seems to be that she'd like them to be hyperlinks in the PDF she creates from those Word files.
Hyperlinking the index entries in the PDF is easy with a tool called Sonar Bookends *Activate* from Viginia Systems (http://www.virginiasystems.com). It turns all the page numbers in a PDF index into hyperlinks to the corresponding pages--only the page numbers, though, not the text of the entries. (That makes sense, because one entry could point to lots of pages.)
I haven't found a way to do the same thing in the Word source file, though. By all means, let us know if you do! If you could, you wouldn't need a follow-on tool, because PDFMaker would convert them automatically, as it does with Word's TOC entries and other hyperlinks.

For the record: I have no financial or other interest in Virginia Systems or its owners or employees. I'm a satisfied user of the *Activate* product, though I doubt I'd use any of the other products they offer.
HTML Indexer 4 is still the easiest way to create and maintain indexes
for web sites, intranets, HTML Help, JavaHelp, and other HTML documents.
Now with fully integrated cross-references, target frames and windows,
multiple-file output, "one-step accept" of default entries, and more!
