TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
By the way, and not that any of us would think of stealing your idea, but do you feel comfortable publicly discussing the subject of a book you are proposing to write, but are not yet contracted to write?
Here's a little story:
A friend of mine is a true genius. He got his PhD in statistics from a world-renowned university in 2 years. When younger, his philosophy was that he would NEVER re-write. His first draft was always -- perfect. He was/is also one of the more obnoxious people on the planet. And, he admits that, but he is anyway. The little green monster in those of us who know and try to love him is always roaring.
Well, anyway, my friend came out with a brilliant concept for a technical book. It was the first of its kind. It was needed. He took someone he thought was a friend to lunch to try to entice him to be his agent on the project, but the person turned him down.
Anyway, my friend got a book contract and wrote the book. But he didn't make as much as he'd anticipated because -- the person he'd taken to lunch ALSO wrote a book on the same topic. And released it the same week. Not as good, but still.
Based on the book sales, my friend was able to quit his job and "retire" to an expensive golfing community. But it could have been even better for him.
So, people -- be careful out there.
