~> As a technical writer, do people (coworkers, customers,
~> internal users, anyone) look to you as an expert on the
~> product you document? To what extent, and in what circumstances?
Yes! Well, maybe not at the start of the project, but definitely at the end.
Right now, I'm documenting our system administration and security. This is
all new to me, but I'm trying to get up to speed as fast as possible. (It
helps that I live with a big techie geek who loves this stuff. Honestly, I
think he likes my job more than I do right now. I love that man! :) By the
time I'm done with this book, I'll know more about physical files, logical
files, user profiles, and such than I'll probably ever need, but that's why
I enjoy this job. I like to learn things.
~> In your current job as a technical writer, what are you
~> considered (by others) to be a Subject Matter Expert of?
Asking the right questions, research, and organization. (and the books I've
already written) It's my job to go out there and gather all of the
information from all of the different sources and pull it together in a
clear manner that suits the user's needs.
