This is getting at the question I was asking. It appears from your response that the word numeral has faded from the working vocabulary of most people, retaining only the single sense you mention. I was really just looking for a reality check, because to me (and presumably to many other of my aging generation), numeral would be the natural choice to distinguish the written numeric symbol from the cardinal or ordinal number that it represents. It applied (in my distant youth) equally to Roman and Arabic numerals. However, as several people have now conveyed the impression that the term is no longer current, I guess I've got my answer.
