I've never made such a request when translating for clients. However, at my
current place of work, we translate in-house from English to French
routinely. The French writer often points out that a certain feature name
or GUI item will be too long or too awkward translated into French as is.
I'd say nine times out of ten, when we put our heads together to come up
with an alternative, we improve the English as well as make it simpler to
translate. The translation process, in these moments, helps us fine-tune
the original.
