I use both the MS MoSfTP and Chicago 14 as standards for my docs. Thus,
I have them by my hand when page-checking my documents. Certainly, these
passes consider things other than grammar--that is, grammar is one of
the things I look out for. While I do make separate passes through the
doc for other reasons, for some reason--this is probably why I am not an
editor--I cannot restrict myself to grammar only, I have to fix other
bugs that I note. For example, I make a quick pass reviewing headers and
footers, and I certainly don't look at anything else during that pass. I
make a quick pass to make sure all graphics are placed well, and I
certainly don't look at anything other than graphics during that pass (I
include callouts in that pass because I am unable to exclude them). When
I make my page-by-page passes, grammar is a strong consideration but I
cannot make it the exclusive consideration. I consider other things on
the page at the same time.
Honestly, though, at this point I seldom open the MS book and don't
frequent Chicago 14 as much as I perhaps should. I do make things
consistent, so my failures tend to be book-wide, global, rather than
local.

Sean,
Why do you rate the Microsft Manual of Style as an arbiter of grammar? I
may
sometimes refer to it as a yardstick of conventional terminology for
Windows-based applications, but not for its grammar.
