Someone already mentioned "assumed formatting". I characterize this as
old-fashioned "Soviet-style" behaviour. The "authorities" - in this case the
Word programmers - know what you need better than you know yourself! This
may be helpful for some casual or routine users, but I find it highly
frustrating for more professional use.

As someone mentioned, this (and many other "soviet" auto-options) can be turned off. The problem is that the most of these things are turned ON by default. You have to take the time to customize anything; I always start by assuming that whatever it does, I can change. And I start with Tools Options and Tools AutoCorrect.
