Regarding the mandated use of Word for all things document related:
One argument that I often use is to draw an analogy between publishing
software and CAD-CAM (computer-aided design / computer-aided manufacturing)
software.
Every Windows installation comes with Microsoft Paint, but I've never seen
anyone use Paint to lay out a circuit board. Drawing the circuit board
traces is not the primary objective, I point out. The whole point of using a
CAD program for circuit board design is to give the CAD files to a
fabrication plant who then produces the boards at the lowest possible cost.
The same case can be made for publishing software. Publishing programs
streamline the entire workflow, making it possible to publish books in
printed, PDF, and HTML-based formats.
Good luck,
Martin
