In chicago, and i'd imagine across the country, Jewish Vocational Services, http://www.jvschicago.org/ , provides employment workshops, vocational services, career services and the like at little or no charge to whomever needs it. They have trained people running networking workshops etc., and you can often pick up information at the JVS workshops that you don't get at the unemployment office, for instance, continuing education grants for people that are on unemployment.
