The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
In my experience, clients will sometimes pay a stipend for health insurance,
over and above the agreed amount for the job. Anon might try this strategy
during negotiation. It would help to have a health care provider lined up
so he/she would know costs beforehand.

Illegal. You can only be added to a company's health care coverage if you
are an employee. If the carrier finds out that you are not an employee, you
risk losing the coverage and being billed at full-cost for any claims. The
company also risks losing coverage for all employees as well as
civil/criminal fines.
