TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I'd be more concerned about the change in working conditions with
regards to the work from home and commute. Of course, the economy is
tight and having your way is more difficult in an employers' market, but
the 1.5-hour commute and lack of work-from-home effectively reduces your
pay.
As for the table thing, that'd drive me nuts.
I don't have a real cube now, and that is an issue for me. I couldn't
imagine working at a lunch table out in the middle of a common area.
Of course, the only solution is to ask for what you want--a demand is
probably out of the question unless you are prepared to walk. Aside from
condolences, I don't think the list can help you much. As average people
with reasonable average expectations, be we tech writers, engineers, or
programmers, we can clearly see how your working conditions have
worsened.
I'm not sure if creativity is an issue so much as concentration and
basic comfort. I've sat in many different workspaces,
