Simple: Just do the entire book as one table. At worst (and more likely), do a single table per chapter. If you have a style guide, you aren't going to change the scholar's margin very often, anyway; so a table per chapter isn't too big a hassle.

Nah, not elegant...and I took the "strengths" statement as irony, although I used the table solution for years at a former employer. Like most things with any tool, it works fine once you get the hang of it.
