Re: Having a killer resume, part deux!
The head of a Dallas outplacement firm with 20 years'
experience also is of the pronounced opinion that
"objectives" are meaningless.
On the other hand, I know of a career management company with 50 years' collective experience that insists that an objective is an essential part of the resume.
I suppose the only way out of this dilemma is not to consider the objective statement in isolation, but in relation to your purposes and the rest of the structure in your resume.
I suspect, for example, that an objective is less important for a tech-writer or a programmer than for a manager or executive. Nor is an objective important if you're applying for an advertised job; the company knows why you're contacting them, and can probably be counted on to read through your resume. However, if you are sending out unsolicited resumes or using several other strategies where the reason for your contact isn't clear, an objective is probably vital.
Similarly, if all your experience is very similar, then your objective is probably reasonably clear. By contrast, if you've had a varied career, then perhaps you need to specify what you're looking for now.
