In Normal and Print Layout views, the Word simply displays the results of its most recent evaluation or the TOC field.

When you choose Print Preview, though, Word recalculates the page numbers.  If the sections don't exist--perhaps because you pasted in the TOC from another document--Word will report "Error! Bookmark not found" for every missing heading.

It's a great reminder to update your TOC before distributing the doc.  :)
