When you switch from Normal to Print Layout, Word reevaluates the TOC--you'll see "Error!  Bookmark not defined" for headings in the TOC that don't exist in the document.

When you switch from Print Layout to Normal, Word doesn't reevaluate the TOC.

When you switch to Print Preview, Word does reevaluate the TOC.

When you update the TOC, it depends whether you select Update Page Numbers Only or Update Entire Table.
