Subject:THANKS (was RE: Can I Prohibit Printing From A Web Site?) From:Tom Murrell <trmurrell -at- yahoo -dot- com> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Tue, 26 Nov 2002 09:17:09 -0800 (PST)
Thanks to everyone who chimed in. Some of you had some very creative suggestions for
how to make it difficult for browsers to print content. Virtually all of you pointed
out that I can't _really_ prevent someone from printing content; all I can do is
make it difficult. That's what *I* thought, and I'm glad to get that confirmed.
I'm going back to the requester to discuss some of the practical ways in which I can
make it difficult for the reader to print a document, if that's what they really
want to do. And we will have a discussion of the desireability of taking even these
steps. Since we're already talking about a restricted web on a restricted server
(Yes, I know that any determined hacker can cut through the crap and get at the
information anyway.), I'm wondering about the message we're sending to those who
have even this limited access. Do we really want to say, "We trust you to see this
information, but we don't trust you to protect it?"
Besides, as I pointed out to them, if they put it on my server, they've actually
added one more person to the access list: Me. Now *I* know I'm a trustworthy chap,
but do they want to take that chance? BWAAAAAAAAAAA-HAH-HAH-HAH!
