OT: Re: ID or Id?
<Furthermore, "Id" is an actual word, coined by good old Dr. Freud.
Der gute Herr Doktor did not coin the word "id." He merely assigned a special
meaning the Latin n. nom. sing. personal pron. "id," which means it. The masc.
nom. sing. nom. is "is" and the fem. nom. sing. is "ea," for completeness' sake.
"Ego" is the nom. sing of the Latin word for "I."
This is getting somewhat off topic now, but what the heck...
The good doctor actually did not create the word (and so had to get his super ego elsewhere ;-), although he did invent the concept. He was a German speaker and so was using the word "es", which means the same as Latin "id" and English "it".
"Id" was created by one J. Riviere as a translation of the term, according to Chambers Dictionary of Etymology.
