Re: A sobering encounter (So now what?)
But stop to think about ANY professional organization. Is it the organization's job to educate the *general public*? Or is it the organization's job to serve and educate those who practice the specialty on which the organization is based, whether it's tech writing or macramÈ?
Professional organizations _can_ educate the public about the concerns of their members - if the organization is big enough and the concerns are interesting enough. (Think NRA, although that's not quite a professional organization.) But I think we can safely assume that the concerns discussed in this thread would not meet with general public interest.
But professional organizations can help in other ways. For example, hardly anybody on this this will be able to do a convincing study about the relative benefits of letting engineers or tech writers do the documentation. The STC, on the other hand, may be able to do so. The results of that study could then be used by individual techwriters to market themselves. (And by engineers trying to avoid writing duty ;-)
