Re: I/internet
By now, going online
is about as commonplace as taking the train or the bus, and if I write
that "I'm taking the train home," I don't capitalize "train." Granted,
there was a time when the Internet was owned and operated by a small
enough and select enough group that it needed to be considered a
specific entity with a proper name -- and it is debatable whether that
time has passed.
I do not think that it has anything to do with whether using the Internet is commonplace. IMHO, you take the train (not the Train) because there are any number of trains. On the other hand, you use the Internet (not the internet) because there is only one of it. (Just as you cannot say "an internet".) Internet does not descrbe a category of things, it is a proper name of a unique entity.
