I've also "gamed the system" by pasting in cover letter text. Worked for me,
I got that job.
I've hard-coded line length to fit their fields, and made an effort to
format as nicely as possible using only Courier plain text. And I got it
perfect in Word before pasting it into the online form. Maybe I've wasted my
time perfecting formatting, if all the text is only used as search hits. I
had no idea how employers were using the text.
