>What's wrong with calling randomly? Find out how many candidates you can
reasonably interview, and randomly select resumes until you've found enough
qualified people to fill the available interview slots. Leave the rest of the
pile alone.
You might be surprised how many people submit resumes for a position for which they have few or no relevant skills. We weren't looking for any "perfect fit," but we were interested in finding the closest one possible within a reasonable timeframe.
We got resumes from people who were clearly overqualified for the position, as well as from people who for one reason or another would have taken a very long time to come up to speed. Some kind of filtering does have to take place.
>What's the point in spending a week, let alone
a month or more, on a hiring process when a reasonable candidate could be
trained in a couple of days or a week?
If "trained" means "knows where the coffee is," sure.
