If I had it to do over again, instead of majoring in English, I would have
majored in something technical (engineering, computer science, something
else science related), and minored in English. I've been a technical
writer in the software industry for five years, and feel like I've been
playing catch-up as I go along. My writing and research skills, along with
my ability to grasp things quickly have helped me immensely, but I still
feel like I'm behind the power curve because I don't have a technical
background.
I'm sure if you browse the archives of this list, you'll find hundreds of
debates over what's more important, being a good writer or an expert in
your field. My own personal opinion based on my experience - the ability
to write is essential, but if you don't want to be struggling, you will
need an expert knowledge of whatever it is you are going to be
documenting.
If I were you, I would stick with majoring in Engineering, with a minor in
English, Journalism, Communications, or something else that is writing
intensive.
My .02 for a Friday.
