I haven't been keeping up with the initial thread, but....
I don't consider the use of serial commas or the use of that/which
"esoteric". Every good writer should have a basic understanding of
grammar, punctuation, etc., and this type of stuff *is* basic.
I would suspect that many people are like me and don't have the
luxury of an editor. We're responsible for writing the text in a
technically accurate and comprehensible manner, and well as
"dotting the i's and crossing the t's".
