I usually get a blank look when I mention "technical writer". When I briefly explain this as "I write software documentation", I get a brief look of understanding - eyebrows are raised fractionally - followed almost immediately by a glazed look indicating "Oh, it's something to do with software. I'm not interested in software."
This is usually the point where I say "So, what do you do then?"
