Cindy Kight said, "It's a much better business environment for women than it
used to be. Mostly, it was a matter of sensitivity and getting used to the idea
that women are real people with brains, too. Most men came around. And I agree
that today most women perceived as 'bitchy' probably are, as are their 'jerk'
counterparts. Assertiveness, appropriately applied, usually generates respect."
I'm 25 so you probably don't think I can relate to the "old days", but I come
from a culture where male chauvinism is still pretty widely encountered and
actually encouraged to a degree (sometimes I feel like the year is 1963, not
2003). What I wonder is: have things really changed all that much, or has it
just become less acceptable to express those attitudes in the workplace?
