I have a client who is currently using Wordperfect 8.0 to perform a rather
complicated procedure. Basically, one person is downloading a file that
contains survey or form responses off an AS/400 then converting it into an
ASCII file with tildas, spaces and a pipe to seperate fields in the file.
The user opens up this file in Wordperfect and runs a macro that converts
each tilda to the data followed by an ENDFIELD (indicating the end of a
field), and each space to an empty ENDFIELD and the pipe is the end of that
record. I am sorry if I am not being more clear, but Wordperfect is very
new to me. At this point they then run another macro that seperates each
record into seperate documents (something they would like to get away from)
and this is then attached to a COMMENT document that explains how to enter
the text in the Master Document. After another user types in information in
the Master Document, he/she merges the master document with the survey
forms.
At this point, I understand that a macro needs to be created that will
replace the tildas, spaces, etc in the ASCII file, but they need to be
replaced as merge fields, and these merge fields need to be numbered in such
a way that they coorelate with the shell documents (survey forms, etc). And
the kicker is that the forms merged against change depending on the user,
which is why it's important that merge fields are numbered. Now in
Wordperfect, the ASCII document is converted into a long master document
that looks something like this:
Data ENDFIELD
Data ENDFIELD
Data ENDFIELD
Data ENDFIELD
ENDFIELD
ENDFIELD
Data ENDFIELD
All of these fields are numbered and those numbers correspond with where
they will appear in their appropriate form. There are around 163 numbered
fields that will be used, but not all (or even half) of them will be used at
any given time, however, the numbering must remain the same or data will be
inserted into the wrong location in the form.
Whew. Sorry for the length. If anyone has any suggestions or comments, I'd
appreciate it.
