Life is harsh.
Do everything you can within your job scope to make her look good, but don't
do her job if she can't. Make sure she is included in emails that are sent
to/from you, show her what you are doing, be a good subordinate. Never do
anything to make her look bad. However, when it comes time to do her job, do
it when you get her office.
The manager's manager should be doing the coaching. I didn't see the word
"invited" anywhere in the original post.

That's harsh, John. Managers are people. They sometimes behave like
pointy-haired bosses because of the roles they are forced into, but they can
improve with coaching. It is perfectly all right for a subordinate, if
invited, to help coach the boss in redefining her role and duties.
