...we are back in the normal state of things in which most technical
communication is industrial in nature and correspondingly requires a depth
of industry specific technical expertise.

Back to the old argument of whether or not specific knowledge is needed. Search the archives for lots and lots and lots of arguments for each side.

It seems to me that people who have specific knowledge for an industry believe that everyone who gets a job should have this expertise. Others of use are technical writer generalists. Put us in any situation, and we can turn out quality documents on time.

As I have stated many times before, I specialize in software lifecycle documentation. It really doesn't matter to me whether the final product is going to be used in-house (I currently work in a biotech lab), by expert consumers, or by the general public. The lifecycle remains the same, and I will learn what I need to know to describe the software to others.

For example, I am currently working on three systems. I understand very little of the science behind any of these three systems, and barely understand the difference between them. But, I can accurately produce requirement specifications, design specifications, and test documents without having the foggiest idea how to be a molecular biologist.
