My turn to chime in...
I am also welcome to sit in on any meeting that involves software. Although
I work in a biotech lab, there is a lot of "backdoor" development going on
-- people building databases for themselves, for example, then coming to our
team a few months later because they suddenly want the information tracked
through the LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System).
Yesterday, I was in a meeting that was supposed to just be demonstrating
software that was partially built, but I knew that requirements would be
coming out during the demo. At one point, one of the scientists said,
"Isn't that a requirement?" I piped up: "I didn't write it down, so it
isn't!" The scientist's manager just smiled and gave me a thumbs up.
It is good to work in an environment where you are valued and considered
part of the team. I would never want to go back to a certain
major-airplane-manufacturer-in-Seattle again.
