I actually got CTS before I became a technical writer. In fact,
technical communication was the field I went into to reduce the stress
on my wrists (after working in a chicken plant, though cleanup with
high pressure hoses not deboning).

Based upon conversations with several people who have had that
surgery, I would highly recommend seeking other options anyway.
Nobody I ever talked to who had had that surgery did not regret it. I
know that's anecdotal evidence, but it was unanimous.
