Subject:RE: No more carpal tunnel for typists From:Lyn Worthen <Lyn -dot- Worthen -at- caselle -dot- com> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Wed, 11 Jun 2003 12:38:13 -0600
At one point, I used to consider a massage to be a truly decadant way to
reward myself at the end of a project.
Then I discovered the difference between a "feel good" massage and a "deep
tissue" massage.
The reduction in muscle tension (neck, shoulders, arms, elbows, wrists,
hands) has been little short of amazing! I had no idea how truly
"puppet-like" our physiology is.
In addition to the deep tissue work, the massage therapist recommended
drinking plenty of water (I sip about 2 qts over the course of a typical 8-9
hour day) to keep the lactic acids from building up in the muscles, and some
light freeweight exercise to strengthen the wrists (small wrist-weights
that you hardly notice, but that provide a very light workout for as long as
you wear them).
YMMV. Discuss your situation thoroughly with your massage therapist. It's
not a cure-all, but can make a big difference.
