question from an ex-contractor re: executive freakouts

Hi!
I'm the lone writer at a software company of about 80. For years, I worked
as a consultant or contractor, and as such I was either dealing with
executives directly (at smaller companies) or not at all (at larger
companies). As such, I've always been insulated from the day-to-day
experience of a regular employee.
At my current company, I hear almost weekly stories about one of the
executive partners freaking out on someone. And some of the stories are
ridiculous. Last week, the CEO had a tantrum at a trade show about what
restaurant the team would to go to. Every week, there's some story about one
of them freaking out on someone.
At first, I thought it was the New Guy Syndrome -- everyone tells the new
guy the horror stories. But people newer than me are telling me the stories,
too.
I worked for about a dozen different companies as a contractor. Only one (as
far as I know) had a freakout-prone CEO, and that company has since
collapsed.
Is this the norm for tech writers out there? Do most software CEOs lose
control of themselves on a regular basis? Have I been working in a bubble
all these years? I thought I was a seasoned veteran of the working world,
but now I'm starting to wonder.
