John Posada asks if taking up another language would be helpful for his working relationship with some of his coworkers.
--------------------------

In college, my Japanese and Chinese coworkers were always happy to learn that I was studying their langauge (Japanese and Chinese that is). It did break the ice. I made closer friendships, and they made an effort to help me learn, which was great for my grades! :-)

So, YEP, I would suggest doing it. One thought though, make sure it's Chinese that they're speaking, and make sure it's the right "dialect." You could slyly ask where they're from. But if you do, be careful as they may be Americans who are bilingual and that's always a bit of an awkward situation. I had worked out a convenient way to phrase the question as not to offend, but I don't quite remember now....drat. :-(
