My comment about "dialect" was mostly geared towards the PRC's policy of referring to the languages spoken within its borders as Chinese dialects and not as languages. I've also met some "traditionalists" go along with this same belief. In fact, I've gotten into some very interesting discussions about it.
Mandarin (what I studied) was a blast. Very difficult as far as tones go, but its grammar was easy to pick up.
Oh, I think I remember how I asked.....something like "Where is your family from?" Was that it....?
