I found this at www.granddictionnaire.com.

"Le terme velcro est à l'origine une marque déposée. La majuscule de la graphie anglaise en est un rappel.
La formation du terme velcro résulte de la soudure de la première syllabe des mots velours et crochet."

Translation:
Velcro comes from two words: "VELour" and "CROchet" ("velvet" and "hook").
It used to be a trademark, which is why it has a capital "V" in English.

I think the "used to" means that you can now use Velcro without getting into trouble.
