That's polite of you, but you didn't waste anybody's time. The people who berated you chose to waste their time, and you are not responsible for their choices.
I'd also like to say that your response to the testiness shows the irght mix: polite, but also not willing to be imposed upon. Keep that attitude, and when you start working, you should do well.
