TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
One problem with using the web to market your services
is that it's tough to target the message to prospective
clients. As a publications manager, I never paid much
attention to the websites of people applying to positions
I had open. As a writer, I prefer to use more targeted
approaches, like sending selected sample excerpts that
approximate the project being discussed. I don't maintain
a website at all. But my work is fairly "industrial,"
and not B2B, Enterprise or any of the internet-heavy types
where websites are extensively used; most of the companies
I work for barely maintain a few pages of inline text and
graphics with links to downloadable product brochures,
bulletins and support info for their customers.
