I think it's important to stress the importance of guidance here, in the
quest for becoming a better writer. Simply writing all the time won't
necessarily make you better at it, just like reading all the time won't
make you good at discerning technique -- unless it's also accompanied by
some sort of instruction or constructive criticism. When I was practicing
tae kwon do, my instructor had a big banner in the back of the studio that
read, "Practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect." At
the time I thought he was just being anal, but later on when I performed a
belt test on my own in front of a line of stern-faced judges (and nearly
petrified with stage fright), I finally understood what he meant.

Hmmm. I had a client call yesterday and say that he needs help becoming
a better writer, would I edit his stuff? Sure I said, I'll edit your
stuff and I can even give you several options for how to phrase things
better, but ultimately you need to keep on writing and eventually you'll
get better.

I believe it's true. I look back at my first doco project, while pretty
and informative was littered with things I would never do now. Now that
I am older, wiser and am always writing, trying to improve my
communication.
