Because of the proprietary nature of ActiveX, it's very difficult to
interoperate. There have been a few attempts, but the current best practice
is to take the source to the ActiveX control and port it to, say, a Java
applet.

There is an emulator called Wine (which it sounds like you know of) that can
be used to run Windows programs on a Linux desktop. A company called
CodeWeavers makes enhanced versions* of it. One of them, CrossOver Plugin,
supports many browser plugins. Some people have reported some success using
it to run ActiveX, but apparently the support is fairly rough. A good
