The master's degree in technical writing was 100% required for me because I
already had a bachelor's degree (journalism) and had *not* been earning my
living as a writer for a number of years. I was coming from completely outside
the field. Within three years, I was being paid in the top range of mid-level
technical editors/writers. I am being paid higher than that now, but I am
freelancing with only one company, so my annual income is not nearly as
comfortable as it was before I lost my job on 9-7-01 during a company layoff.
