TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
At the risk of venturing too far into philosophy, I'll say that it's my
experience that we don't control our circumstances. We only control how we
perceive them and what we do about them. Thus, we can't (nor should we
expect to) control others. We control only ourselves. This goes for
everyone, not just writers.
Sure, we can influence others, and others can influence us. But in both
cases, influence works only to the degree to which we agree to be
influenced. Therein lies the control I'm talking about. If you don't agree
to play the game, then the game cannot be played, regardless of how loudly
the other party (like your boss) objects.
Wasn't it Captain Kirk who once said somewhere that if the current game is
unwinnable, then you must change the parameters of play?

Please respond to "nosnivel -at- netvision -dot- net -dot- il"
But logically, the idea that each of us controls
his own circumstances does seem impossible. After
all, if everyone else's behavior is determined by
my own attitude, then similarly mine would have to
be determined by each of theirs. We can't all
have control over everybody else all at once.
Influence, maybe. Control, impossible.
