TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Glad it works for you, but it won't work for everyone every time. A
document's language can *never* be properly set, since this is a paragraph
attribute, not a document attribute. It is possible for a style to be set
for a different language, and the style's settings might kick in the next
time you open the document for a spellcheck. Your fix will probably work if
you apply it *every* time you check spelling.
Styles and templates are responsible for many of the apparently random
events encountered by casual Word users. I don't like 'em either, but that's
how it goes. To properly ensure that text is permanently set for the
language you need, use Format|Style|Modify|Format|Language, rather than
Tools|Language.

Another thing to check is whether the document's language has been
properly set. You can select the document, then choose Tools>Language>Set
Language. Scroll down to find the language setting you need (our documents
here use U.S. English), highlight the language, and select OK. Then
spell-check the doc again.
